Flowers and plants fascinate human kind since the beginning of time and thus in the history of man there was never a moment in which people didn't want to decorate their home or public spaces with nature's beauty. No wonder that the florists profession even today is one of the most mesmerizing and that people are still looking forward to learn how to make bouquets of flowers, floral arrangements or wreaths. To be a florist means to practice classical handcrafting, which in comparison with other such professions is much more attractive and more aesthetic and thus is a career outlook mainly preferred by women.
A brief history of floristics
This craft is named after the roman goddess of flowers and youth Flora. The joy, however, beautifully to decorate gardens or indoor spaces with plants or bouquets goes back far before the Roman Empire or even the ancient Greeks. In almost all cultures on mother earth flowers were valued because of their variety of colors and smells as a special ornamental feature, which found its use widely in Festivals or the cherishing of great rulers. These traditions have lasted until this very day, as for occasions like birthdays, weddings or baptisms to present with flowers is a must.The florist as a profession is since 1960 in Germany settled, in many places this craft still wears the name ”flower merchant”. This term however covers the job of the florist very briefly, because floristic is not merely about the distribution of flowers and plants. Broad knowledge for breeding and taking care of numerous of plants is a must for the florists craft just as the knowledge optimally to combine flowers and accessories in attractive bouquets who match the appropriate color and composition for every occasion, time of the year and person.
The profession of the florist in practice
To win the title of the florist in Germany one must complete a three-year training. During which the basic theories and practices are to be studied in accordance with the arrangement as well as the sale of flowers. As in every classical career an opportunity arises to continue this course of study and pass a master-exam, which, if the case, provides the qualifications needed to own a personal floral shop. During the Master education course one studies economics, but not less important are the special insights into floristic and botanic. These insights usually ensure that one places an emphasis on his interest and afterwards gains more experience in the field of floristics, for instance in the breeding of orchids.The profession of the florist in the future
Still after decades the interest for the florists craft is to be found not only among women, especially after earning a secondary school qualifications it is an optimal way in one owns career training. The market tells us that there are more and more people who are fascinated from beautifully put together bouquets for different occasions, that is to say that the abilities of the florist are getting more and more important, so that a florist can meet the need of the customers wide range of wishes when it comes to the choice of color or arrangement. The convention to give flowers either for a big event or as a symbol of love has been for over centuries around and it will surely sustain in the future. The profession of the florist is thus a branch with future which can be put into practice in one’s own flower shop as well as employed in a private floral shop.
